These Things Can Ruin Your Reputation

If you think about some of the most famous people, along those who run many of the world's largest companies, often what they have in common is a stellar reputation. It likely took them years to build that reputation and they consequently have a knack for maintaining it. It's not hard to ruin a good reputation in a manner of a few minutes, relatively speaking. That is why it is so critical to be mindful of what type of reputation you do have and avoid those habits that could otherwise knock that image down.

1. Failing to trust your gut.

Almost 100% of the time, your gut is probably going to be right. Learning to trust your instincts can mean the difference between upholding your solid reputation and decimating it. Your instincts develop over time until you get to that point where nobody knows what's better for you than that gut instinct.

2. Not knowing where your online reputation stands

Some of the most successful people do have to contend with the negative online press. The key is to be aware of what's being posted about you and then consequently take action. This could mean responding, or perhaps simply talking to the person responsible in a civil manner and expressing your concern and willingness to listen to how they feel. There are some fights worth fighting and then there are others that require a different approach altogether.

3. Being content with meeting expectations

The most successful people aren't satisfied with merely meeting expectations and thereby doing only what is required—rather, they strive to exceed expectations. If for instance, someone sends you a request via email, don't just shrug it off and wait until the last minute to respond. Get on it immediately—this will make an impression.

4. Just taking shortcuts

Along these same lines, people who take shortcuts, who slap things together right before it's due, and who look only for the easiest route possible are probably not going to make the best impression. You want people to want to work with you because you deliver high-quality results. Being known as someone who's always searching for the quickest way, is only hurting you in the end.
